70TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

This is what Herefordshire Mencap has achieved over 70 years.
1955: Family Carers started meeting because they wanted the best for their children.
They campaigned for their children to go to school, to have respite to give families a break and more. They held up banners and stood outside council buildings.
They raised a lot of money from an annual canoe rally and Wye Valley Walk.
1984: they bought a house for 4 people who were moving into the community from a nearby long stay hospital. They believed that they knew how to support people as well as professionals. The house is still providing supported living to local people.
1990s: They started 2 companies to operate the homes. The company became Aspire with several Herefordshire Mencap trustees remaining on the board.
2000s: people with learning disabilities wanted to have their say about their lives. Kevin Stuchbery and Paul Scott joined Herefordshire Mencap.
Now most of our trustees have a learning disability.
2025: we are not retiring. These are our current campaigns:

- Hate Crime, Keeping People Safe, working with local police, victim support and Herefordshire Council.
- Changing Places toilets, supporting Horizon Centre and EnviroAbility in Ross to get a toilet in Ross.
- Bus Passes Anytime: ending the disabled persons’ bus pass starting at 9.30am between Mondays and Fridays. Thank you to Ellie Chowns MP, Councillors Jenny Bartlett, Polly Andrews and Mark Woodhall for your support.
- Hear Our Voices: bringing Herefordshire people together to drive change in their lives; working with Health Watch Herefordshire.
- Working with self-advocates across the West Midlands
