70TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
11 APRIL 2025

This is what Herefordshire Mencap has achieved over 70 years.

1955: Family Carers started meeting because they wanted the best for their children.
They campaigned for their children to go to school, to have respite to give families a break and more.  They held up banners and stood outside council buildings.
They raised a lot of money from an annual canoe rally and Wye Valley Walk.

1984: they bought a house for 4 people who were moving into the community from a nearby long stay hospital.  They believed that they knew how to support people as well as professionals.  The house is still providing supported living to local people.

1990s: They started 2 companies to operate the homes.  The company became Aspire with several Herefordshire Mencap trustees remaining on the board.

2000s: people with learning disabilities wanted to have their say about their lives.  Kevin Stuchbery and Paul Scott joined Herefordshire Mencap.

Now most of our trustees have a learning disability.

2025: we are not retiring.  These are our current campaigns:
  • Hate Crime, Keeping People Safe, working with local police, victim support and Herefordshire Council.
  • Changing Places toilets, supporting Horizon Centre and EnviroAbility in Ross to get a toilet in Ross.
  • Bus Passes Anytime: ending the disabled persons’ bus pass starting at 9.30am between Mondays and Fridays.  Thank you to Ellie Chowns MP, Councillors Jenny Bartlett, Polly Andrews and Mark Woodhall for your support.
  • Hear Our Voices: bringing Herefordshire people together to drive change in their lives; working with Health Watch Herefordshire.
  • Working with self-advocates across the West Midlands
